Innovation Through Human – Centered Design

The Fundamentals of Innovation through Human – Centered Design programme, is conducted by Luma Institute annually. Our UX team, consisting of Eugene, Felicia and Doreen, had the opportunity to attend the two-day session held here in Singapore back in December 2016. To understand what they have gotten out of the programme, I sat down with them to pick their brains and find out what they’ve learnt.


Hey guys, firstly, Happy New Year! Could you tell me how your LUMA training went?

F:  Hey! It went really well for me. I learnt a whole set of new methodologies that I could use for design research and practice. I was really impressed with the two workshop conductors who made the workshop engaging and meaningful, such that we could have solid takeaways from the training.

E: Being someone who enjoys learning, the LUMA course reinforced and added value to my knowledge in various problem-solving techniques from my previous experiences.

D: The LUMA training went well! I got to meet interesting people and to practice using the new design thinking methods we’ve learnt together. When it comes to design thinking, it’s always important to involve people of various disciplines with different perspectives.


What were some of your key takeaways from the training?

F: For me I think the real takeaway was how there are really many methodologies for productive user design research but it’s really about how you plan to use these methodologies, in what context and for what purpose and that is what yields results. So going through the training, learning the pros and cons of the methodologies taught and how to use them properly, was really good for me.

E: The course was a reminder that different approaches can be utilised to solve the same problem, and that the flexibility in which these techniques can be used in conjunction with one another allows us to create better solutions.

D: Setting a short time limit for design-thinking sessions can help to keep people focused on churning out ideas. Fostering a creative environment is also important for brainstorming. E.g:  Encourage drawing and exploring new methods.


How did the LUMA training benefit in your everyday work?

F:  For us as designers, we need to know the whys, hows and whats before we design. Thus, we need to employ a strong user research. Coming from an Industrial Design background where strong emphasis is placed on user research, the LUMA training was like a refresher course on the importance of design research. It has provided me with knowledge on a new set of tools which I can use now. For example, the UX team recently started on a new healthcare initiative and we did a mini workshop to kickstart the initiative and get our brains buzzing.

E: When I am facilitating workshops for Palo’s clients, I feel confident to take center-stage in guiding participants in ideating for a better solution that solves their problems effectively.

D: As a UX Consultant, it’s important to get the most of out of design thinking workshops or stakeholder meetings in order for us to make design decisions. Methods taught in LUMA will come in handy for us to facilitate and/or involve in ideation with clients effectively.


How was the LUMA programme any different from the previous trainings you’ve attended?

F: It presented some new tools for us to use that could complement tools learnt from other workshops. I wouldn’t say that it was different, but that it was complementary, adding to a basket of tools that are super useful for user research and designing.

E: The LUMA program was aimed at giving non-design thinkers an understanding of what design thinking is and how it can be used to solve problems.

D: The programme focused on methods to conduct design-thinking workshops. I acted as a workshop attendee during the programme. At the same time, I also observed how my lecturer conducted the workshop as a facilitator. I will have opportunities to switch between both roles (contributor and facilitator) at work.

Other trainings I have attended focused more on design technical and individual skills.


Lastly, will we be expecting great things from you guys now that you’ve completed the training? *winks*

F:  Of course! Training was just the start, now we have to put it to good use and see how this could really work for us.

E:  Of course you would! We’ll be utilising various techniques to create new solutions for Palo’s own internal projects, so do look forward to them in the months to come! 🙂

D: We are always doing something great! Haha…


From my conversation with them, it’s pretty obvious that they had loads of fun attending the workshop. Only time will tell if they will put their training to good use and bring more exciting insights and projects to our evolving company / industry! Keep up the amazing work guys 🙂
